These vases are reminiscent of the great Victorian artist T S Cooper, who was challenged for a vast sum of money to draw 500 sheep all in different poses – he won! Hannah Barlow was brilliant at depicting animals in varied postures. The posture of each cow is different and plausible.

The 6.25in (16cm) Doulton Lambeth vases have the impressed Doulton Lambeth mark and are dated 1887. They are both signed in monogram by Hannah Barlow and numbered 794, and also signed by Alice Budden. The vases weigh 2211g.

Each vase had a minute ‘flea bite’ to the top rim. These have now been professionally and invisibly restored. There is also a small firing crack to the underside of one vase.
