This pair of stoneware Royal Doulton Bessie Newbery vases - 8138 - is 26cm tall and was designed by Francis C Pope. The design is illustrated on page 217 in Desmond Eyles' book, 'The Doulton Lambeth Wares'.

A superb pair of vases, designed by one of Doulton's leading designers, Francis C Pope, and modelled by one of Doulton's finest ceramic artists, Bessie Newbery. They can be dated accurately to 1922-3, as they have the impressed Doulton Circle mark with Lion as a backstamp, which started use in 1922. In 1923, Bessie Newbery left Doultons after 42 years work. The design (in another colour scheme) is illustrated in Desmond Eyles' The Doulton Lambeth Wares on page 217.

The vases are in totally original condition. They have no cracks, crazing, restoration, but there is one small underglaze nibble to the base of one vase, which was made during the manufacturing process. This is illustrated in the photo of the vase base.
