In 1902, Doultons became Royal Doulton with the grant of a royal warrant from King Edward VII. This was not the only major change. With the change of name came a major change of design, with the flourishing of the Art Nouveau movement. For the items produced in significant numbers, the elaborate designs with elaborate detail gave way to simple tubelined designs with blocks of plain colour. For the 'top' designers such as Mark Marshall and Eliza Simmance the sophistication of design and colour remained, but not with the intricacy of detail seen in the previous two decades. In the later part of this period, the Art Deco movement ran in parallel with the Art Nouveau movement.
